Responsibilities
Following is master’s additional responsibilities including but not limited to:-
a. Approve and ensure that the passage plan is prepared by the navigating officer
prior commencement of voyage and in accordance with company procedures and
guidelines.
b. Ultimately responsible for the upkeep and accuracy check of the navigational
equipment’s and navigation logs.
c. Appoint Chief Officer to be in charge of cargo operation.
d. Verify and approve Cargo & Ballast Operations. He shall be fully responsible in
ensuring safe, efficient and unhindered cargo operations in port and that vessel
proceeds to sea on schedule and in a seaworthy condition complete with sufficient
compliment, fuel and stores.
e. Ensure that all personnel joining the vessel are given the Health, Safety,
Environmental & Security Orientation Training prior sailing.
f. Ensure all documents, certificates, crew list, Customs Declaration, etc ready for
port authorities on arrival and prior sailing.
g. At least once a week, whether in port or at sea, a thorough inspection of the
accommodation, machinery space and stores shall be conducted and recorded in
the log book.
h. Write Master Standing Order upon joining the vessel. He shall ensure all deck
officers read understand and signs the order.
i. Shall leave instructions on the Master’s Night Order Book when on passage and
at anchor especially when approaching harbor or when critical situations are
expected.
j. Report to management on indiscipline, misconduct and lack of performance of the
crew.
k. Implement and Monitor Environmental Management Plan on board vessel.
l. Master shall prepare Assignment Report (Hand Over Report) for his reliever which
covers area such as Vessel Trade, Vessel Performance, Navigation and
Communication, Accommodation, Deck and Hull, Deck Machinery, Trading
Certificates and Survey Status, Damage List / Condition of Class, Stores, Staff
Performance etc.
