ASMAR MAGALLANES SHIPYARD

About

Historical Background

In the far reaches of Punta Arenas, the inception of what is now known as ASMAR Magallanes Shipyard was set in motion by the Bonacic Brothers in 1896, marking the establishment of the Naval Shipyard. This endeavor evolved over the decades, eventually becoming the ASMAR 21 de Mayo Shipyard. A significant partnership in 1986 between ASMAR and the South African firm Sandock Austral Ltd led to the formation of SAEM Shipyard in Bahia Catalina. A strategic consolidation of the two sites occurred in 1999, culminating in the current, well-equipped shipyard.

Facilities and Capabilities

Today, ASMAR Magallanes stands as the globe's southernmost shipyard, boasting a raft of facilities endorsed by the ISPS Code for maritime and port facility security. Its infrastructure features a marine railway capable of accommodating vessels up to 3,570 tons, a longitudinal transference line stretching 212 meters, and a parallel line of 135 meters reflecting 9 docking positions. The shipyard is further supplemented by a 300-meter pier and extensive workshops designed to handle a wide array of ship repair tasks. A unique offering of the shipyard includes the construction of 9.5-meter self-propelled barges, equipped for handling 20" containers during loading and unloading operations.

Quality Assurance and Certifications

Commitment to excellence at ASMAR Magallanes is underscored by its adherence to the International Quality Standard ISO-9001:2008. This certification attests to the shipyard's high standards in quality management, ensuring that all projects meet stringent quality requirements. Additionally, the facility’s full compliance with international security standards sets a benchmark for shipyard operations, reinforcing its status as a leader in the shipbuilding and repair industry.
