Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Company Limited, established in 1865, stands as a prominent symbol of China's naval strength. Initially set up as the Kiangnan Arsenal in Shanghai during the Qing Dynasty's Self-Strengthening Movement, its primary role was crafting firearms and assembling naval ships. By the Tongzhi era, it had grown into the largest arms manufacturing facility in East Asia. Remarkably, it launched East Asia's inaugural steamboat in 1868 and began steel production in 1891. Furthermore, its compound included essential educational institutions like a language academy, a translation center, and a technical institute, playing a critical role in the nation's industrial progress. Over the decades, the shipyard transitioned, relocating its operations to Chongqing with the ascent of the Chinese Communist Party in 1949, and ultimately integrating into the China State Shipbuilding Corporation as a subsidiary. It stands out for its trailblazing investments and innovations within the People's Republic, being home to the first ten-thousand-tonne hydraulic forging press and the premiere domestically engineered ocean-going cargo vessel.

Presently situated on Changxing Island in Shanghai, Jiangnan Shipyard is renowned for its specialization in the construction, repair, and modification of both military and civilian ships. The facility has seen a substantial 64% growth since 2011, showcasing its broad expertise in constructing a wide array of commercial vessels—ranging from liquefied gas carriers and crude oil tankers to fast feeder container ships—as well as military crafts like Type 052D destroyers. Its ability to cater to both commercial and defense sectors underscores the shipyard's strategic value and technical prowess. In terms of infrastructure, the commercial arm boasts eleven T-shaped piers, four dry docks, along with several block construction zones and areas for fabrication and assembly. The military division is notable for its unique floodable ship basin, specialized construction hall, and exclusive areas for launching and outfitting, signifying its premier position in naval shipbuilding.
