Location and Accessibility of the ShipyardNASSCO's primary shipyard is strategically situated along the San Diego Bay, boasting a navigational channel depth of 35 feet. Vessels en route to NASSCO are required to navigate beneath the Coronado Bridge, which offers a vertical clearance of 195 feet. Spanning 86 acres of terrestrial space and an additional 47 acres of aquatic domain, the shipyard is designed to accommodate a variety of maritime needs.
Shipyard Features and InfrastructureKey infrastructure includes two sloped construction lanes measuring 950 feet in length and 108 feet in width, in addition to eight berths with comprehensive services that vary in length from 600 to 1,000 feet. A notable feature is the graving dock, extending 1,000 feet in length and 174 feet in width, with a lifting capacity of 30,000 long tons. The yard is also equipped with 9 whirley/portal cranes, capable of individual lifts up to 300 tons and combined lifts reaching 620 tons. Moreover, a NASVEA certified floating drydock, spanning 820 feet by 136 feet, boasts a lifting prowess of 35,000 long tons. Supporting maritime construction and repair projects, the yard features 6 production workshops, 10 assembly zones, 2 blast cells, and 5 paint cells specifically designed for the indoor preparation and coating of hull blocks (52’x52’x30′).
