GEMAK SHIPYARD ALTINOVA

About

Acquisition and Development

In 2012, the Gemak Group took ownership of Gemak Altınova Shipyard, embarking on the construction of a new facility in 2013 following the award of a contract to produce steel decks for the third Bosphorus Bridge. The shipyard saw significant investment in facilities enhancements, including ground stabilization through jet grouting and the establishment of specialized blasting and painting halls measuring 67x28x20m and 68x28x12m, respectively. These halls are fully enclosed and climate-controlled to ensure environmentally friendly and weather-independent operations. Additionally, infrastructure for segment assembly and panel fabrication was set up to support both the European and Asian segments of the bridge.

Logistics and Construction Capabilities

To facilitate the transport of bulky and heavy constructions, the shipyard acquired self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) with a collective capability of 36 axles and a 1,440-tonne loading capacity. A load-out quay was also developed for the seamless transfer of massive structures to transport vessels using the SPMTs. Impressively, the construction of the third Bosphorus Bridge (Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge), a jewel in the Northern Marmara Highway Project, was completed, boasting dimensions of 322 meters in height, 59 meters in width, and 1,408 meters in length. The bridge's construction involved the fabrication of 59 steel deck segments weighing around 48,000 tons, among other significant feats, facilitated by the shipyard's robust facilities including the use of Deck Cargo Ship M/V “NETA” equipped with a Dynamic Positioning System (DP-1).

Powership Projects and Future Prospects

Gemak Altınova Shipyard has successfully completed the conversion of two bulk carriers measuring 290x45m into Powerships. These floating power plants, featuring 21 Diesel Generators and dual-fuel engine technology, boast a 450MW capacity and can directly supply electricity to transmission networks from onboard high-voltage substations. The conversion process encompassed extensive works including the fabrication of 7,000 tons of steel and 1,500 tons of pipework, alongside more than 1,500 equipment installations. As the shipyard continues to expand its capabilities, it aims to play a more significant role in manufacturing off-shore platforms, floating docks, bridges, and large ship sections, along with vessel repairs and conversions for ships up to 400m in the near future.

Facility Overview

Occupying a grand expanse of 147,805m², Gemak Altınova Shipyard comprises 12,999m² of indoor space and 134,806.401m² of outdoor facilities. This vast area underpins the shipyard's capacity for undertaking large-scale steel fabrication and painting projects, setting the stage for future expansions and projects that the shipyard will embark upon.
