DAMEN SHIPYARDS CAPE TOWN

About

Historical Background of Damen Shipyards Cape Town

Established in 1988 under the name Foarocean Marine Shipyard by three founders originating from the sectors of deep-sea fishing, shipbuilding, and repairs, Damen Shipyards Cape Town initially began operations as a closed corporation. By 1994, it transitioned into a private entity. The culmination of 2007 saw this entity becoming part of the Damen Shipyards Group following the acquisition of its assets and workforce. Consequently, Damen Shipyards Cape Town (Pty) Ltd was formed, with Montsi Investments holding a 30% ownership stake. Presently, the shipyard boasts the capacity to construct up to ten vessels annually.

Strategic Partnership and Expansion

For over two decades, a collaborative relationship flourished between Damen and Farocean Marine, largely facilitated through the Damen Technical Cooperation programme. This partnership was highlighted in 1998 with the launch of the first Damen Stan Tug 1906/2006, marking the beginning of numerous Damen-designed ships being manufactured within the Cape Town facility. Subsequent to this, significant investments have been made towards the refurbishment and extension of the shipyard. These enhancements encompass the expansion of operational space, the adoption of cutting-edge machinery, and the installation of higher-capacity overhead cranes, all of which has led to an increase in vessel production, workforce expansion, and the improvement of employment conditions.

Production and Services

Currently, Damen Shipyards Cape Town divides its manufacturing capabilities equally between the construction of standardized Damen vessels and the fulfillment of bespoke contract requirements. Leveraging extensive industry experience, the company is adept at delivering tailored professional recommendations that accommodate the specific needs and budgetary constraints of each client. Owing to its longstanding presence, over the last four decades, Damen Services has specialized in the refurbishment, conversion, and repair of both Damen-branded and non-Damen vessels, presenting a viable alternative to the more substantial investments necessitated by new builds.
